Date: 14/06/09   Duration: 4.02 Minutes
Preston - Preston

South Asian Community Festival.

The Asian community infused Avenham Park in Preston with spice, song and dance for the 12th annual Mela festival.

Thousands of people packed out the park in June for this unique northern celebration of South Asian culture.

The event had dozens of workshops and stalls in henna, sand painting, crafts, and traditional Asian food stalls which kept appetites satisfied all day.

Gulab Singh, Mela chairman, said: "The Mela is one of Preston's high-profile cultural events for the citizens of Preston and surrounding areas. People come to the Mela again and again and always have a memorable day out, learn new skills and enjoy the rich diversity Preston offers"

The theme of the event was climate change and faith perspectives and numerous community groups were on hand to discuss any questions people may have about these key issues.

Mela translated into English means fair, and it is fair to say that Mela is one of Preston’s most unique and favourite events.

Traditional and conventional South Asian arts and culture come alive, with a heritage of music, dance, crafts and food.
