2010 show highlights
Staggering floral displays, mammoth vegetables and a respected botanist and author of a staggering thirty-five books, Dr David Bellamy OBE, were just some of the highlights as Southport burst into bloom for the annual flower show held from 18th to the 21st August.
The Show, which has been running for over 80 years, attracted 80,000 visitors and was opened in style by actress Suranne Jones who was determined to sniff out some vibrant hanging baskets for her home.
Also in attendance were celebrity gardeners Diarmuid Gavin, Sir Roddy Llewellyn and professor Stefan Buczacki, all of whom were buzzing around like bees on a Brugmansia.
The sweeping carpets of flowing flowers were complemented by a new food village, which provided wine quaffing and cooking demonstrations. With more than 30 qualified food producers offering the chance to sample local produce, the visitors were spoiled for choice.
Another new addition to the show for 2010 was the Bloomin’ Good Books Festival, which featured readings and appearances by authors such as crime writer Tess Gerritsen and BBC Gardener’s World presenter Toby Buckland.
The gardeners of tomorrow were also represented in the 'David Bellamy School Garden Competition'. Two local school children had their garden designs displayed at the show and received their prize from the man himself, David Bellamy.
