Preston Health Mela 2012

Date: 22/04/12
Preston - Preston

Preston Health Mela has been an annual feature in the city's calendar for over ten years now, and this year saw a growth in all size, scale and popularity.

We thought it fitting to send Jonny and Emma along to put their bodies to the test, and find out a little more about healthy living.

at the Guild Hall

Held in 2012 for the first time at Preston's Guild Hall, the Mela team originally set out to improve health awareness and well being among the ethnic population of the area where there was incidence of heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

Following the success of early Melas, the event has been expanded to offer advice to people of all backgrounds and now attracts families of all ages and ethnicity from the area.

The community was encouraged to sample complementary medicine such as reflexology, holistic living, reiki and Indian head massage.

People could also have a full health MOT including having their blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and weight checked.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Jonny got involved with the guys from Preston City Council, in a test of football prowess and cycling endurance (ish).

It wasn't all about healthy eating and exercise, there was room for relaxation too! Emma signed up to experience the ever popular Indian head massage.

Jonny took a break from winding Emma up to check how high his own blood pressure was.

...and Emma set aside her fear of needles to have her blood checked for cholesterol.
