Great North Swim 2009

Date: 16/09/09   Duration: 4.57 minutes

Lake Windermere, Cumbria

The spectacular surroundings of the Lake District National Park provided the perfect backdrop to the Great North Swim as over 6,000 swimmers plunged into the water.

Britain’s biggest open-water swim took place in the waters of the magnificent Lake Windermere and drew huge crowds to the lakeside resort.

Some of the world’s top swimmers splashed, slashed and glided through the chilly water as well as celebrities Steve McFadden and Sonia O'Sullivan, together with a supporting cast of thousands of winners of different ages and abilities.

Colin Hill, Great Swim Project Manager said: "The Great North Swim has now turned into an iconic swim in the sporting calendar. I'd like to thank all of the event partners who had the vision to support the swim and help make it the biggest and best outdoor swim in the country."
