Bolton - Blackrod
Blackrod 3rd & 4th July 2010
Dozens of straw-stuffed scarecrows flooded onto several Lancashire streets this summer in the hope of being crowned Scarecrow Festival Champion.
The event, held in Blackrod just outside Bolton on Sunday the 4th of July, is in its fourth year and brings hundreds of tourists into the village.
Elvis, Dame Edna, The Beatles and even the Go Compare man, with many other weird and wonderful creations, were on display competing in this community event which has replaced the old carnival.
The festival involved most of the local residents who created the scarecrows from scratch and displayed them proudly outside their homes.
Colleen Roocroft, aged 71, not content with making one scarecrow, she went on to create not only the Beatles but Amy Winehouse as well!.
She said: “I like making them and picking up all the accessories from charity shops. It is a lot of work but it is good to do it and we have had a lot of positive comments.”
