 Guild Honorary Burgesses revealed

The nominated Honorary Burgesses for Guild 2012 are in good company with the likes of Sir Tom Finney, who was granted the same accolade at the last Preston Guild in 1992.

Earlier this year, the call went out for nominations of worthy Prestonians to be granted Honorary Burgess status and the Guild team were delighted with the response; a total of 51 were received. The selection panel, made up of the Guild Mayor, Guild Stewards and the Clerk of the Guild, had very difficult decisions to make as all the nominees were very commendable.

The twenty people chosen will receive the honour at the Adjourned Guild Court on the morning of Saturday 8 September in the Guild Hall. At the end of this traditional ceremony, the Guild Roll and the Guild Court will be closed for another 20 years. Honorary Burgesses can also pass their burgess status down to their sons and daughters, as with all existing burgesses.

These new families will make the 2012 Guild Roll a more representative picture of Preston today - helping to bring a tradition that started over 800 years ago into the 21st century. Guild Mayor, Councillor Carl Crompton, said: “Choosing only 20 from the worthy people on the list was a very tough job.

To be nominated as an Honorary Burgess by other Prestonians is high praise indeed. “The Guild Court and Adjourned Court ceremonies form the heart of the Guild celebrations, and these Honorary Burgesses will become part of that history keeping the spirit of Preston alive through the generations to come.”
